About us

Our department has been oriented to the high energy physics from the very beginnig. The scientific activities are focused on the properties study of the subatomic particles at the highest possible energies. At the present time the main cooperation has the Department of Subnuclear Physics established with CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research), where the biggest and most advanced machine in the world, LHC - the Large Hadron Collider, is situated.

The participation in LHC projects, specifically in the ALICE experiment and ATLAS experiment, presents the most significant period in the scientific-research activities of our department.

In the year 2014 there was awarded The Prize of SAS for international science-technic cooperation to the team from the Department of Subnuclear Physics IEP SAS in Košice: Ing. Jaroslav Bán, CSc., doc. RNDr. Dušan Bruncko, CSc., RNDr. Eduard Kladiva, CSc., RNDr. Michal Seman, CSc., RNDr. Pavol Stríženec, CSc. for the results obtained at the discovery and measurement of the particle properties consistent with Higgs boson in colaboration with CERN.

In the year 2002 there was awarded The Prize of SAS for international cooperation with the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN near Geneva to the team from Institute of Experimental Physics SAS, Faculty of Science UPJŠ in Košice and Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics UK in Bratislava: L. Šándor, A. Jusko, I. Králik, K. Šafařík, J. Urbán and R. Lietava for the sophisticated experiments (WA97 and NA57) performed at the CERN accelerator SPS during which for the first time the quark-gluon plasma at the laboratory conditions in the heavy ion interactions study at highest possible energies was observed.
